artist statement

We all form differently over time. Some properties seem to be engrained in us, while others are affected by our environment. Various aspects of life leave impressions on us. Others see diverse characteristics in each person, not too different from: forms in clouds, patterns in tea leaves at the bottom of a mug, or an image on toast. What others see in us is not what makes us but seems to either attract or repel. Our spirit is there regardless and some claim to be able to see it. Sometimes, we see what we want.

For this project, I chose olive wood for the medium.

We try to highlight certain positive qualities while hiding negative ones. We try to cover up unpleasing traits and blot out the past, while bringing attention to golden ones that we want others to notice. We affect one another, for better or worse. We tend to work on others, just as we work on ourselves.

Each year we grow a new ring, or record of impacts. On the other hand, we may peel back a new layer, like the leaves of a cabbage until we reveal our true selves, or until nothing is left but our spirit, like that of a dryad.

We pick and we scratch at one another. We dig at scars, but we are just scratching the surface. We are constantly being whittled. This all takes time. Although, some events and experiences can have a quicker, longer-lasting impression.

Once we are where we feel we should be, we often attempt to have a polished outward appearance. We feel protected. We are forged by fire.

No matter how much we try, the more we micro-analyze, the more we find what either we, or society, deems to be flaws. We are never quite perfect. Sometimes we don’t like what we’ve become. Sometimes we shed our skin and start over upon self-reflection or self-deprecation.

Life is temporal and ephemeral. Sometimes it’s only in the end that we begin to accept ourselves for what we are. Sometimes never. Sometimes, we have to forgive others. Sometimes, we have to forgive ourselves.

These olive branches are an ancient symbol of peace. I hope that you find yours.
